surprise breath

Take a surprise breath through your already-established embouchure, as though someone startled you (without making any noise). For a brief moment, hold that position before playing.  This energizes your breath, and it sets your ribs in the appoggio position.  Maintain the feeling of appoggio or holding your breath when you play.  You’ll discover a richer sound and a clearer onset of tone. This approach allows the air to be energized without creating throat tension and without requiring an embouchure readjustment. This approach, added to gentle articulation, is also a great way to build the low register tone and response.
